Why Financial Reporting Matters to Your Enterprise

Financial reporting helps you by:

  • Attracting Investment and Building Trust: Transparent and accurate reports demonstrate the health of your business to potential investors and lenders, showing them you are a good investment.
  • Informing Business Decisions: By tracking revenue, expenses, and profitability, you can spot trends, manage cash flow, and make informed decisions about your operations.
  • Enhancing Financial Health: Understanding your numbers allows you to manage debt, optimize spending, and ensure you have the resources to meet your short-term obligations.
  • Improving Relationships: Sharing clear financial data builds trust with your partners, suppliers, and other stakeholders.

Why Financial Reporting Matters to WRI

Financial reporting helps WRI to:

  • Provide a clear and simple overview of the enterprise's performance.
  • Identify gaps or opportunities where we can support your business.
  • Understand our investments in your business so we can transparently report back to our funders, which in turn can attract additional funding.
  • Improve on WRI's investment strategy.

The financial indicators discussed below reflect the spending efficiency, profitability, and financial health of your business.

Key Financial Indicators for Enterprises

There are 5 key indicators that help assess the financial health of your enterprise:

1. Net Profit Margin Net Profit Margin shows the percentage of your revenue that becomes net profit after all expenses are paid. It helps to assess your operational efficiency and how well you manage costs. A healthy net profit margin indicates that your business is sustainable and ready for investment.

  • How it's calculated: (Net Profit / Total Revenue) x 100.
  • Example (2024 Financial Position):
    • Total Revenue: KES 50,531,337.
    • Total Expenses: KES 44,516,039.
    • Net Profit: KES 6,015,298.
    • Net Profit Margin: 12%.

2. Gross & Percent Change in Revenue This indicator shows the growth or decline of your revenue over a year. It is a simple way to see if your business is growing.

  • How it's calculated: ((Revenue Current Year - Revenue Previous Year) / Revenue Previous Year) × 100

3. Current Ratio The Current Ratio measures your enterprise's ability to pay off its short-term debts. It is a key indicator of your financial health and can help identify potential cash flow problems. A current ratio above 1.0 indicates that the company can pay its short-term obligations.

  • Current Assets: Resources that can be converted to cash or used within one year, such as cash, accounts receivable, and inventory.
  • Current Liabilities: Debts or obligations that a company expects to settle within one year, such as accounts payable and short-term loans.
  • How it's calculated: Current Assets divided by Current Liabilities.

4. Loan Repayment Performance / % On-Time Repayments This indicator measures the percentage of your finance that has been repaid on time. It shows your reliability in managing and repaying loans.

5. External Finance Catalysed: This is the total amount of additional funds your enterprise has secured, such as loans, equity, or grants. It demonstrates your ability to attract external investment and grow your business.

Data Sources and Verification

The financial information you report comes from your organizational financial records (audited statements and non-audited management accounts), and investment agreements. It is crucial to have accurate and verified data.
