Guide to Entering Tree Species on TerraMatch

This article outlines how to add tree species to applications on TerraMatch. For guidance on selecting tree species that are appropriate for your project, please consult these guidelines.

Organization history

The TerraMatch tree species user interface utilizes The World Flora Online database of all known plants to ensure proper use of approved scientific names for each tree species.

To add a scientific name to the list of tree species your organization has planted in the past, simply begin typing the scientific name in the text box. The name of your species will populate below the bar. Click on the name of the species in the dropdown list to link your entry to TerraMatch.

To add the species to this list of species planted, click on the + symbol on the right of the text box.

To edit any entries in the list, use the pencil button on the left. This will allow you to change the name of the species entered. Click “save” to record the changes, or “cancel” to undo any edits.

To delete a tree species entry, click on the trash can icon on the right. Click “confirm” to confirm the removal of the entry, or “cancel” to undo any changes.

If you are unsure of the scientific name of the species, you have the option to enter the name of the tree species without linking to the taxonomic backbone. Type the species in the text box and click on the + sign to add to the species list. This will trigger a review by a member of the TerraMatch team to identify the proper scientific name of the written species.

The species will then populate in the list, with a symbol identifying that this is a non-scientific name.

Project proposed species

The tree species user interface functions the same as the organisational history, with the added option of entering the number of trees to be planted for each species.

To enter this value, please enter the number in the box provided on the right. Any additional species will add the number of trees entered into the total “trees to be planted” on the top right.
