In order to best support our cohorts of Restoration Champions, the TerraFund for AFR100 team is made up a series of partners and staff. Below you will find the descriptions of the organizations and team members that work together to make TerraFund possible.
TerraFund Partners
World Resources Institute (WRI)
WRI is a non-profit organization dedicated to meeting people’s essential needs, protecting and restoring nature, and stabilizing the climate.
WRI manages the TerraFund program and organizes its partners; determines strategy and develops core business; raises funds and connects finance to champions; vets, finances, manages, and builds the capacity of champions; owns and improves the monitoring, reporting, and verification framework; and operates the TerraMatch platform, home to applications and monitoring data.
WRI is a founding member of the AFR100 Initiative and leads the Restore Local project, which TerraFund for AFR100 supports.
One Tree Planted
One Tree Planted is a non-profit that funds and manages restoration projects across the globe. It disburses grant funding to non-profit champions, co-manages TerraFund’s grantmaking arm, and vets non-profit applications for financing. Its on-the-ground project managers closely support champions through site visits and regularly scheduled check-ins. They also quality assure biophysical, socioeconomic, and financial data submitted by organizations.
Realize Impact, Africa Trees, and Barka
Realize Impact, its subsidiary Africa Trees, and Barka make debt and equity investments in for-profit restoration champions. They disburse and collect payment on loans, make equity investments by buying shares, and track the financial progress for all for-profit champions. They vet and select enterprises and determine the characteristics of each investment, e.g., interest rate, tenor, company valuation. Their staff closely advise each enterprise, working with WRI project managers.
The TerraFund Support Team
Project Manager
TerraFund assigns each funded champion a project manager. That person plays a pivotal role in the planning, organization, and supervision of the execution of TerraFund projects, working diligently to achieve the set goals and objectives. This key member, housed at One Tree Planted for non-profits and WRI for for-profits, manages financial resources, timelines, and daily communication with partners to ensure the project's successful completion. They also quality assure reporting data, ensuring that all information submitted in reporting is sufficiently reviewed. A project manager also conducts site visits to project locations.
Portfolio Specialist
TerraFund assigns each funded champion a portfolio specialist. That person coordinates technical assistance and monitoring, reporting, and verification support for a TerraFund project. Housed at WRI, they lead on the development and refinement of core business processes that affect all TerraFund projects, and they liaise with government officials in target landscapes, ensuring that communication is smooth. A portfolio specialist also conducts site visits to project locations.
Data Quality Analyst
TerraFund assigns each funded champion a data quality analyst. That person advises the champion on the correct geospatial location data collection strategy and then checks the quality of geospatial location data. A data quality analyst also conducts site visits to project locations.
Community Coordinator
Thacien Munyamahame serves as the TerraFund Community Coordinator, communicating in both English and French to all cohort members. He sends cohort-wide emails through the MailerLite email system, manages WhatsApp groups, and sources content for email newsletters. TerraFund cohort members are expected to thoroughly review all information sent by Thacien.
